Without that one person

What would your life be like without your favorite person?

It doesn’t have to be someone romantic. It could be anyone; a spouse, a child, a relative, a friend, a co-worker.

I’m talking about that one person you most look forward to telling a story to.

Sure, you’d be sad and in grief for a long time. You’d cry. You’d hate it. Holidays would be different. That’s the obvious stuff.

But what would change in your daily life?

What’s the unexpected?

One cup at breakfast instead of two?

Maybe you don’t have to buy that weird-flavored snack food anymore, and you’d never be forced to smell it again.  Would you buy it anyway, just to remember?

What would you do with the extra shoes, the plans you’d made together, or the now-free time you used to spend visiting this person?

Boy, you hit a nerve. My person is a family member I seldom see and only occasionally talk to. But when I do, it’s like having a twin who totally “gets” me and delights in the parts of me that I value. It would be like knowing I’d spend the rest of my life in a soundproof one way glass box, surrounded by people, but never be seen or heard.
Just the thought made tears come to my eyes and my chest constrict with anxiety.

No way, Jose! you may be afraid of storms, but I’m terrified at a very deep level of actually becoming mute and invisible.

Wrote a story when I was in college about a teen who felt invisible and finally managed it. It was pretty superficial, but I think there were some roots to it.

I have a hard time imagining anyone describe you as “invisible.” You’re definitely a standout! And as another person who never tends to blend, I know both sides of that coin.

I do get what you mean, though. All I want in this world is to be remembered. It’s haunted me since I was a kid. I think that’s why I write.

Well, I remember you. Can’t forget you. You helped me become who I am today, And I am thankful.

I wish you success in all of your endeavors.
